Blackpool vs Burton Albion Match Analysis & Prediction
10/01/2024 10:00 pm
Seeking to secure their place in the EFL Trophy quarter-finals, League One sides Blackpool and Burton Albion meet at Bloomfield Road in the third round on Wednesday night.
The two teams most recently met on Boxing Day when Burton secured a narrow 1-0 home victory over Blackpool in the League One, through an early goal from Bobby Kamwa.
After kicking off 2024 with a 2-0 home victory over Lincoln City in the league, Blackpool secured an FA Cup third-round replay against Nottingham Forest after holding the Premier League side to a 2-2 draw at the City Ground on Sunday.
Neil Critchley’s side, who currently sit eighth in League One and just four points behind the playoffs, have progressed to the third round of the EFL Trophy for the first time in six years after winning all three group-stage matches before beating Barnsley 2-1 on home soil in the second round last month.
The Tangerines have won each of their last five home matches across all competitions, and will be seeking revenge against Burton on Wednesday following their aforementioned league defeat a fortnight ago, as they aim to progress to the quarter-finals of the EFL Trophy for the first time since 2016.
Since beating Blackpool on Boxing Day, Burton have endured a mixed run of form in the league, as they have won one, lost one and drawn one across their last three games, including a 1-1 draw at home to Wycombe Wanderers last weekend.
Caretaker manager Gary Mills – who has been in charge of six first-team matches since the sacking of Dino Maamria last month, has his side sitting 17th in the League One standings, five points above the relegation zone having played at least one game more than six of the seven teams below them.
Burton shift their attention to the EFL Trophy, a competition in which they have reached the third round for the second successive year having previously failed to reach this stage in their entire history.
The Brewers won two of their three group-stage matches before beating League Two side Mansfield Town 2-1 in the second round last month.
While their record in this year’s EFL Trophy and their recent victory over Blackpool should provide them with confidence heading into the midweek tie, success on Wednesday is not given as they have won just three of their 16 away matches across all competitions so far this season.
Blackpool vs. Burton Albion Head to head
In the nine previous meetings between these two teams, Blackpool have claimed three victories while Burton have won four, and they have drawn in two. They have each scored nine goals in the process.

Burton Albion Team News
Burton’s Kwadwo Baah remains out with a hamstring injury, while Cole Stockton, Josh Walker and Josh Gordon were all missing out last weekend and it remains to be seen if they will feature on Wednesday.
Mills is unlikely to make too many changes to his first XI, but the likes of Rekeem Harper, Mustapha Carayol and Jake Caprice will all be pushing to start after beginning as substitutes last time out.
