When Wigan Athletic and Sutton United meet in their EFL Trophy semi-final tie on Tuesday evening, they will be competing for a place at Wembley Stadium with kickoff at 10:45 pm.
On Saturday, Will Keane’s goal just before halftime was enough for Wigan Athletic to see off their struggling visitors, AFC Wimbledon.
Their opponents had not won in a remarkable 17 games, but Leam Richardson’s side recorded all three points from the match at the DW Stadium.
By beating Rotherham United on Saturday, they closed the gap at the top of the table to just four points, and with two games in hand as well, presented themselves with an excellent opportunity to strengthen their hold on an automatic promotion spot to take them back into the Championship.
Following a defeat of bottom-of-the-table Scunthorpe United last week and a win over Rochdale on Saturday, Sutton have increased their chances of back-to-back promotions in League Two.
Enzio Boldewijn scored a brace in the first half before Joe Kizzi added another goal in the second half. Those victories have them up to third place in the League Two table, but they aren’t assured of promotion yet – they still have to play Exeter City, who are only three points behind them in eighth place.
