23/11/2022 10:30 pm
Port Vale will be looking to progress to the next round of the EFL Trophy when they battle it out with Barnsley at Vale Park on Wednesday.
Both teams currently play their football in League One, and they played out a 1-1 draw when they met at Oakwell back in September.
Port Vale were very impressive in the group stages, winning all three matches without conceding a goal to achieve progression to the first knockout round.
Darrell Clarke’s side claimed a 2-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers U21 in their last EFL Trophy game to secure their spot as group winners, with Malvind Benning and Ademipo Odubeko scoring late goals.
In terms of their league performances, Port Vale have made a very good start in their first season back in the third tier, currently 10th in the standings, just four points off the playoff spots.
The Valiants claimed a 1-0 victory over Charlton Athletic on home soil last time out, a scoreline that they have made a habit out of winning by, having beaten Lincoln City and Cambridge United the same way in their previous two victories.
Meanwhile, Barnsley were not quite as dominant as Port Vale in their EFL Trophy group, but they managed to win two of their three matches to secure their place in the first knockout round.
Their fate came down to the final game, in which they comfortably defeated Doncaster Rovers 4-2 after racing into a 4-0 lead before half time, with Josh Martin and Fabio Jalo scoring braces.
The Tykes have made a solid start to the campaign in the league, having been relegated from the Championship last season, and they are currently sixth in the table, and they also secured progression to the second round of the FA Cup with a 2-1 victory away at Bolton Wanderers.
