Motherwell vs St Mirren Match Analysis and Prediction

Two teams level on points and goal-difference in the Scottish Premiership square off this weekend as Motherwell welcome St Mirren to Fir Park for their Matchday 32 fixture on Saturday evening with kickoff at 17:00.

Motherwell have endured a difficult second half to the season as they have to failed to win a single Premiership match in 2022. They were left empty-handed again last time out as they fell to a 2-1 defeat to St Johnstone at away before the international beak. They have now suffered back-to-back defeats across all competitions as prior to the Saints defeat, the Well were coming off another 2-1 defeat to Hibernian in the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup.

Graham Alexander’s side have been relying on draws to keep contention for a top-half finish, but the defeat to St Johnstone saw them drop into the bottom-half where they sit in eight on 36 points from 31 matches, level on points with St Mirren and the seventh-placed Ross County.

However, the Steelmen are still just three points behind the fourth-placed Dundee United and a win on Saturday could see them rise to fourth depending on other results. They will need to drastically improve, though, in order to make that happen.

Meanwhile St Mirren also head into the match in poor form, although not to the degree of Motherwell in terms of results this year. The Buddies have only claimed one win from their last seven matches across all competitions and are coming off back-to-back defeats to Heats in the Scottish Cup and Dundee United in the Premiership.

Four defeats from their last five league matches has seen the Saints drop into the ninth-place although there are level on points and goal difference with eight-placed Motherwell and another negative result on Saturday would see them drop down to 10th place, something they will be looking to avoid.

However, a win would also leave the Saints in the top half making this a much closer encounter with both sides looking to take advantage on Saturday.
