Chicago Fire vs Vancouver Whitecaps Match Analysis & Prediction

31/08/2023 3:30 am

Two sides barely clinging to playoff spots in their respective conceferences will meet at Soldier Field on Thursday morning, as the Chicago Fire host the Vancouver Whitecaps in the first game between teams this year.
The hosts have lost back-to-back matches, losing 3-0 to the Los Angeles Galaxy last Saturday, currently two points above DC United for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
Meanwhile, the Whitecaps edged the Portland Timbers 3-2, putting them two points clear of the postseason line in the West.
Chicago are holding down a playoff spot by the skin of their teeth and have nine matches remaining in their quest for the postseason for the first time since 2017.
While an elusive playoff berth will be the ultimate goal for this team between now and the end of the season, the Fire need eight points from their final nine games to surpass their total from 2022 (39).
Vancouver began their seven-game road trip on the right foot this past weekend, picking up their second away victory of the MLS campaign.
Their victory put them in the lead for the Cascadia Cup, but more importantly, it has them in a much stronger position to return to the postseason.
It was only the fifth time that the Whitecaps had won an away game in this competition since Vanni Sartini took charge in August 2021, with Vancouver having now earned nine points away from home in the 2023 regular campaign, one fewer than in 2022.
Thursday will be the first time Vancouver face an Eastern Conference opponent on the road in MLS action this year, with this team winless in their last seven regular-season matches away from home against the East, losing all three encounters against that conference last year by a combined score of 8-2.
Chicago Fire vs. Vancouver Whitecaps Head to head
In the 13 previous meetings between these two teams, Chicago Fire have claimed three victories while Vancouver Whitecaps have won seven, and they have drawn in three. Vancouver have scored 20 goals and conceded 17 in the process.
