AFCON round of 16 continues as Morocco take on Malawi in the sixth fixture of the round at the Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo on Tuesday night with kickoff at 22:00.
Morocco sailed through the group stage with two wins and a draw in their three games and qualified to the round of 16 as Group C leaders with two points above Gabon. They beat Ghana 1-0 in their opening fixture, and then followed that up with a well-deserved 2-0 win over Comoros in their second game before wrapping the group with a 2-2 draw against Gabon.
The Atlas Lions head into the knockout stage looking to go through to the end for the first time in 50 years and they will fancy their chances of making it out of the first matchof this year’s competition as they are currently in a good form, having only lost one of their last 29 matches in all competitions and will be looking the form. Also they have not lost to their Tuesday’s opponents in their last three encounters, scoring seven goals while conceding just one.
On the other hand, despite being the Group B’s underdogs Malawi still managed to qualify for the last 16 of the competition as one of the best third sides after claiming four points from their three matches.
They were denied their dream start to their AFCON campaign as they fell to a 1-0 defeat to Guinea on the opening day. However, the Flames did well to bounce back in their next group encounter as they came from behind to claim a 2-1 victory against Zimbabwe, before wrapping up the group with a hard fought 0-0 draw against Senegal.
Meke Mwase will be hoping that his side can take confidence from their last two matches to cause an upset here as they look to extend their life in their fourth AFCON appearance.
