AFCON debutants Gambia take on host nation Cameroon the quarter-finals of the tournament at the Olembe Stadium on Saturday evening with kickoff at 19:00.
Gambia have surpassed expectations by reaching thus far in the competition in their first ever appearance in the Africa’s biggest stage. They progressed from the group stages unbeaten, claiming two wins and a draw in their three Group F fixtures.
They opened the campaign on the front as they claimed a 1-0 victory against Mauritania, before holding out for an impressive 1-1 draw against Mali and wrapped up the group in style as they stunned Tunisia to a 1-0 victory.
Tom Saintfiet’s men did not stop there, but they carried on their habit of causing upsets into the knockout stages of the competition as they produced sensational quality to grind out a 1-0 victory against Guinea in the last-16.
Gambia will now be looking to continue in their ways and perhaps pull one of the biggest upsets in their history against the host nation Cameroon. Indeed it will be fascinating to see how they perform in this one.
Meanwhile Cameroon have made an impressive Africa Cup of Nations campaign and have emerged as the favorites to win the title on home soil. They advanced through the group stages unbeaten claiming two victories and one draw in their three Group A matches.
The Indomitable Lions opened on a victorious note as they came from behind to claim a 2-1 victory against Burkina Faso, before crushing Ethiopia 4-1 in the second match and wrapped up the group with a 1-1 draw against Cape Verde.
They saw off Comoros in the round of 16 when they claimed a 2-0 victory with Karl Toko Ekambi and Vincent Aboubakar getting the goals for Cameroon and Youssouf M’Changama getting the consolation for Comoros.
With Gambia’s determination we expect Cameroon to be troubled on one or two occasions but Toni Conceicao’s men will fancy their chances as they head into the match in a good form having lost none of their last eight matches across all competitions, claiming seven wins and one draw in the run. They will want to keep the momentum going as they to go through to the end.
