Egypt will be looking for a second win in two games in Group D of the 2023 AFCON Qualifiers when they take on Ethiopia at Bingu National Stadium on Thursday.
Ethiopia opened their qualifying campaign in a disappointing manner as they fell to a 2-1 defeat to Malawi on Sunday, with Gabadinho Mhango’s brace sealing the deal for Malawi while Abubeker Nasir’s effort only proved to be a consolation for Ethiopia.
They have now failed to win any of their last 11 games across all competitons, including each of their three games at the 2022 AFCON back in January, where they finished bottom of Group A with one point. They will now be looking to end their poor run as they eye a second consecutive AFCON appearance.
However, they face Egypt who finished as runners-up in the last AFCON edition and are the group’s favorites. The Pharaohs opened with a 1-0 victory over Guinea at home last Sunday, with Mostafa Mohamed winning the game in the 89th minute.
Prior to that Egypt were on a back off a heartbreaking defeat to Senegal in a penalty shootout that saw them fail to secure a place in the 2022 World Cup finals in Qatar. We believe all that is now behind them and will be eyeing a 26th appearance at the continental showpiece.
The Eagles will fancy their chances in the Thursday’s clash as they are in much better form than their hosts and they have plenty of quality in the squad that could be too much for Ethiopia.
