Wolfsburg vs Lille Match Analysis and Prediction

Lille will travel to Wolfsburg on Wednesday for the final matchday in Group G, as they seek to confirm thier progress to the 2021-22 Champions League knockout states in first place.

They are currently one point clear at the top of the rankings ahead of their their travel to Wolfsburg, who are bottom of the section but are still in with a chance of a top-two finish.

As it is in the tightly-fought section in Group G, it is impossible for fourth-placed Wolfsburg to clinch third and a Europa League spot, but a place in the Champions League last-16 is still on the cards.

Wolfsburg have failed themselves in recent weeks, losing their strong start to the season as they struggle for inspiration in all areas of the pitch during the packed winter schedule.

Florian Kohfeldt’s side lost 2-0 to Sevilla in the Champions League through goals from Joan Jordan and Rafa Mir. That result preceded back-to-back Bundesliga defeats to Borussia Dortmund and Mainz.

They head to Wednesday’s match on a four-game winless run in all competitions, losing each of their last three with 10 goals conceded.

Jocelyn Gourvennec now seems to have found formation at Lille, who have suddenly risen to the top of the rankings in Group G after registering two victories over Sevilla and Red Bull Salzburg.

Lille have picked eight points from a possible 15 in the Champions League and are guaranteed to finish at least third in the section, so a few tough weeks of playing in both European and domestic football will be presented upon them.

Wolfsburg and Lille played a 0-0 draw during September’s clash at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy, but the Mastiffs have now failed to win any of their three encounters, with their most recent clash at the Volkswagen Arena in the 2014-15 Europa League ending 1-1 with goals from Divock Origi and Kevin De Bruyne.

Wolfsburg news

Lukas Nmecha is suspended, while Maximilian Philipp and Renato Steffen can both feel hopeful of starting in the final third.

Goalkeeper Koen Casteels is likely to return from coronavirus infection in time for the Wednesday’s game, while William, Admir Mehmedi, Bartosz Bialek and Xaver Schlager remain absent.

Lille news

Jonathan Bamba and Xeka will be out with suspension, as Renato Sanches should move back into the midfield with Xeka’s absence, allowing David and Burak Yilmaz to resume their partnership.

Yusuf Yazici could deputise for Bamba given Timothy Weah’s absence through a muscle injury. Sven Botman could replace Tiago Djalo in defence.

Prediction and Odds

Wolfsburg are currently struggling to maintain a good form, while Lille are enjoying a good form since the arrival of Jocelyn.

We expect the difference in form between the two side to be displayed in this game, and we expect Lille to overwhelm the hosts. So we predict Lille to take the victory of the day.
