League two leaders, Forest Green Rovers visit Walsall on Wednesday for an EFL trophy group L fixture at the Banks’s Stadium. The Saddlers are already guaranteed to go through and a win for the visitors will send them into the knockout stages.
The EFL Trophy is proving to be a good hunting ground for Walsall who are currently top of Group L and they remain unbeaten having won both against Brighton U21 in their opening fixture in a 1-0 victory before playing out a 1-1 draw with Northampton Town last time out.
Walsall have found things difficult in League Two this season and are currently 14 on the standings with 20 points. However, Walsall coming to this match have shown improvements and are unbeaten in their last seven matches across all competitions, including a 1-0 victory over Kings Lynn Town in the FA Cup first round in the weekend fixture.
Matt Taylor’s squad remains unbeaten in eight matches ahead of this match and will be looking to extend the streak in group L.
Forest Green on the other side have had a perfect run and are on top of the league two table and are on the run to get a promotion to league one having failed to achieve that in the playoffs last season.
Though on a fine league form, Rob Edwards side fell to a shock FA Cup loss on Sunday away at the St Albans city. Edwards’ wouldn’t hold on to the early Mathew Stevens strike in the 18th minute and the match was overturned ending in a 3-2 loss.
The Rovers have fared little better in the EFL Trophy with both of their games in this competition so far having been decided by means of a penalty shootout. Edwards’ side will have a tough weekend after the Wednesday fixture where they’ll meet Hartlepool and this might keep some players off for the fixture.
