Manchester City begins their quest for Champions League glory as La Liga giants Sevilla welcome the Premier League champions to the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan in Group G on Tuesday.
Pep Guardiola’s side were dumped out in the semi-finas by Real Madrid last year, while Sevilla were eliminated from the group stage before unsuccessfully challenging for Europa League glory.
Prior to the 2021-22 campaign, Sevilla had never failed to make it out of their Champions League group, but Los Palanganas could only finish third behind Lille and Red Bull Salzburg last season.
Previous successes in Europa League also counted for nothing as Sevilla lost to West Ham United in the last 16 of the Europe’s secondary competition, but a fourth-placed finish in La Liga handed them another chance to test their strength in the top tier.
The home faithful can take solace in the fact that Los Palanganas are unbeaten in six Champions League opening-day group-stage matches, and one point against Manchester City may be celebrated as all three this week.
Erling Braut Haaland failed to bag a third successive hat-trick at the weekend, and even though the towering Norwegian made it 10 Premier League goals for the season at Villa Park, Manchester City dropped another two points early doors.
Arsenal now have the chance to stay atop of the Premier League table for the time being, but there is still a lot of domestic football to be played in the coming months, and City fans are also growing impatient for a continental honour.
Manchester City ran out 5-2 victors over two matches when they first met Sevilla competitively in the 2015-16 group stage, and if the hosts were not already fearing an in-form Haaland enough, he scored four goals in two games for Borussia Dortmund against Los Palanganas in 2020-21.

Sevilla remain depleted in defence by injuries to Karim Rekik and Marcao, while Jesus Corona is also expected to remain sidelined until 2023 with a fibula fracture.
New arrival Kasper Dolberg earned his first minutes off the bench for Sevilla at the weekend after joining on loan from Nice to compete with Youssef En-Nesyri.
Manchester City news
Manchester City already have Aymeric Laporte out of contention for Tuesday’s contest due to a knee injury, and Kyle Walker is also a concern for Guardiola.
Walker’s absence could see Joao Cancelo move back to the right-hand side, while the visitors will also hope to have Kalvin Phillips back from a shoulder issue.

With a new-look defence already under the hit due to injuries and their attackers largely failing to fire, Sevilla look set to fall for a defeat on Tuesday.
