Both RB Salzburg and Sevilla will be looking for a place in the last 16 when they go head to head in the final day decider in Group G of the UEFA Champions League at Red Bull Arena on Wednesday night with kickoff at 23:00.
Group G is the most open group with the two qualifying spots open for grabs for all sides in the group as only three points separate the first side and the fourth. Salzburg and Sevilla are separated by just on point with the Austrians sitting in the second spot on seven points just a point behind Lille at the top, while the Spaniards sit in the third on six points just one point above fourth-placed Wolfsburg.
Salzburg opened the group stage well drawing 1-1 with Sevilla on first day before beating Lille 2-1 and Wolfsburg 3-1 in their second and third matches. The run had them sitting at the top of the group at the time, but two defeats from their last two group matches had them knocked off their perch at the summit. They first lost 2-1 to Wolfsburg before falling to a 1-0 defeat to Lillie a defeat that saw the Ligue 1 outfits leapfrog them.
A win on Wednesday for the home side will guarantee them a place in the last 16 while a draw will have them in strong position to qualify. Matthias Jaissle’s men therefore have to just avoid a defeat in this crucial match and may find themselves in the knockout stage. However, avoiding defeat hasn’t been easy for the hosts who have claimed just two wins from their last seven across all competitions, but they are still in fine home form as they have not lost at Red Bull Arena this season across all competitions and will look to build on that.
Sevilla opened the group stage slowly as after their 1-1 draw with Salzburg on the opening day, they followed that with 1-1 draw against Wolfsburg and 0-0 draw with Lille in their second and third matches before losing out 2-1 to Lille in their fourth. However, the Spaniard are off a 2-0 success against Wolfsburg in their last outing and they will be grateful to the win as it put them right back in the qualification mix.
A win for Sevilla on Wednesday will guarantee them a knockout place but Julen Lopetegui’s side have been struggling on the road claiming just three wins in their last 10 away matches across all competitions. However, the visitors will be looking to build on their triumph over Wolfsburg.
