Following a month-long break from competitive action during the World Cup, Sheffield United and Huddersfield Town will resume their rivalry on Saturday when they meet at Bramall Lane in a Championship match.
The hosts are currently second in the league table, three points off the summit, while their visitors fight at the bottom of the division.
Sheffield United began the mid-season break in a strong position, having started their promotion push in fine form to sit second in the Championship with 38 points from their opening 21 outings.
That has largely been down to their formidable defensive form—no other side conceded as few as 19 goals in England’s second tier so far—while they also showed their attacking prowess at home to league leaders Burnley soon before the break.
Paul Heckingbottom’s side reduced the gap to top spot by dishing out a 5-2 thrashing, but they would go on to suffer a disappointing defeat in the following encounter, losing 1-0 at home to Rotherham United.
Huddersfield Town, another team from Yorkshire, are in a different fight. The Terriers are fighting to avoid relegation from the Championship after earning only 12 points from their first 15 matches.
Mark Fotheringham’s side did manage to pick up an important 1-0 win at home against Millwall at the end of October, but then suffered consecutive defeats against Sunderland and Blackburn.
The Terriers headed into the break two matches unbeaten in England’s second tier though, firstly bouncing back from those defeats with an impressive 2-1 victory away at QPR, thanks to Josh Ruffels’s early brace after Lyndon Dykes had put their opponents ahead inside two minutes.
