Arsenal vs Aston Villa Match Analysis & Prediction
15/10/2023 4:00 pm
Arsenal Women and Aston Villa Women will both be looking to claim their first win of the Women’s Super League season when they meet at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.
While the Gunners have taken one point from their opening two matches, Aston Villa have suffered successive league defeats.
Arsenal have endured a difficult start to the 2022-23 campaign, which began with a Champions League exit in the first round of qualifying.
The Gunners experienced more disappointment on the opening weekend of the WSL season when they lost 1-0 at home to Liverpool.
Although they took the lead through Stina Blackstenius in their most recent encounter with Manchester United, Arsenal looked to be heading towards another defeat after a goalkeeping error allowed Leah Galton to equalise, before Melvine Malard put the Red Devils ahead in the 81st minute.
However, Cloe Lacasse proved to be Arsenal’s hero, coming off the bench to produce a superb long-range goal in the third minute of stoppage time, ensuring that the Gunners returned home with a point on the board.
As one of four teams yet to win in the WSL this season, Arsenal know that they need to get on track sooner than later if they are to mount a serious title challenge.
After achieving a commendable fifth-placed finish last season, Aston Villa came into the 2023-24 campaign in a confident mood.
However, that positive feeling has began to fade away following defeats to Manchester United and Liverpool in their opening two matches.
Despite taking the lead against the Red Devils, the Villans were ultimately left empty-handed after conceding two late goals.
Aston Villa were unable to offer a response in last weekend’s away encounter with Liverpool, as goals from Marie Hobinger and Natasha Flint condemned them to a 2-0 defeat, bringing an end to the club’s seven-game unbeaten away league run.
While Carla Ward’s side may be low on confidence following a poor start, they will be able to draw inspiration from the fact that they won 2-0 in their last encounter with Arsenal in May.
Arsenal vs. Aston Villa Head to head
In the seven previous meetings between these two teams, Arsenal have claimed five victories while Aston Villa have won one, and they have drawn once. Aston Villa have scored three goals and conceded 22 in the process.
