Peterborough United will be looking to end their six-game losing run across all competitions when they welcome Tottenham Hotspur U21 to the London Road Stadium for Tuesday’s EFL Trophy southern Section Group D contest.
Both sides lost their opening matches in the group, with the hosts losing 2-1 to Stevenage while Tottenham suffered defeat to Wycombe Wanderers on penalties.
After winning five of their opening six matches of the new season then enduring a six-game run without so much as a draw, Grant McCann would have taken positives from his side’s most recent defeat to Bolton Wanderers, where they narrowly lost 1-0.
Peterborough will not be afforded any recess during the international break either, as they look to bounce back from a 2-1 defeat to Stevenage in their opening EFL Trophy game, which has left them bottom of their group after one match.
Posh were absent from last year’s EFL Trophy due to their participation in the Championship, but have reached the quarter-finals in three of the last four competitions in which they have been present, and have not been eliminated in the group stage since 2016-17.
Meanwhile, Tottenham have also failed to stamp their authority in the early stages of the season and are still searching for their first victory in Premier League 2 and EFL Trophy action this season.
Spurs have gone six matches in the Premier League 2 without a win, drawing three of their first four and losing two to Crystal Palace and Blackburn Rovers, conceding three goals in each of those back-to-back defeats.
Tottenham U21 made it to the second round of the EFL Trophy in 2018-19 before losing 3-0 to Oxford United, and they have since suffered three successive group-stage eliminations, but victory over Peterborough in their first meeting could act as the catalyst for their improved fortunes.
Peterborough United vs Tottenham Hotspur U21 head to head

Peterborough United news
Peterborough defender Ronnie Edwards will not be available this week following his call-up to England’s U21 team, while striker Joe Taylor will represent Wales’ U21.
Irish midfielder Jack Taylor and Finnish goalkeeper Lucas Bergstrom are reportedly on standby for their respective national teams, while Frankie Kent will deputise for Edwards in the flanks.
Tottenham Hotspur U21 news
Tottenham right-back Kallum Cesay has been called up to the senior Sierra Leone squad for September’s matches, while Tyrell Ashcroft came off injured in Saturday’s defeat to Blackburn.
Brooklyn Lyons-Foster and Alfie Dorrington could therefore be forced to deputise in the full-back areas, while Aaron Maguire and Matthew Craig are also on international duty.
Prediction and Odds
Neither of the sides are on top of their game at the moment and have both lost players to international duty, so fireworks are unlikely to fly at the London Road Stadium.
However, attacking the wide areas should lead to significant success for Peterborough, with Tottemham particularly light in that area.
