The EFL Trophy will be back in action in the third round on Tuesday when Oldham Athletic will be hosting Wigan Athletic.
Both teams have narrowly pushed through their second round matches back in late November but are poles apart in their league performances.
Oldham’s second successive goalless draw which came against Hartlepool on Saturday, extended their winless run to seven matches in the league.
However, that also reflects back-to-back clean sheet, after having conceded eight goals in two games prior to that and having previously gone eight matches without a clean sheet in the league.
Their last game without conceding came in the EFL Trophy when they overcame Sunderland, with Harry Vaughan’s 53rd-minute goal at the Stadium of Light proving to be enough to knock over a side at the opposite end of League Two.
The Latics will now hope for another upset in this fixture, considering they are currently sitting at the bottom of the football league and will be taking on a side flying high in the third division – who progressed past Accrington in the second round through penalties.
Meanwhile, Wigan have not been defeated since October, keeping an unbeaten run of 12 games, and have won seven of their last nine games in all competitions.
However, they have slipped to 3rd in the League One standings resulting from their own mistake, as their festive schedule was affected by postponements due to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Saturday’s match with Accrington Stanley was their third successive game to be cancelled, after havinh seen their fixtures with Fleetwood Town and Crewe Alexandra postponed.
That has resulted to Leam Richardson’s men being out of action since defeating Oxford United on December 18 and they may have to overcome some rustiness if the game will go on as scheduled.
