Fresh from EFL Cup final heartbreak Chelsea look to take a step towards another cup final when they travel to Kenilworth Road Stadium to take on Championship outfits Luton Town in the last-16 of FA cup on Wednesday night with kickoff at 22:15.
Luton Town have made a straightforward run in the tournament to make it to this round with the club seeing off teams from lower leagues in the third and fourth rounds. They first dispatched Harrogate Town with a 4-0 victory in the third round, before overcoming Cambridge Untied 3-0 in the fourth round.
They now take on a Premier League outfit in the fifth round and they will hope that their fine Championship run gives them the confidence to cause an upset here. Indeed, since their win over League One outfits Cambridge, Luton have only lost one of their last five Championship matches and are coming off a three-match winning streak; including the 1-0 victory over Derby County at home on Saturday.
The victory saw them climb into the promotion-playoffs berth and they will want to continue the momentum as they aim for Premier League football next season. A win over Chelsea here will give their confidence a massive boost while extending their run in the Cup in the process.
Meanwhile, Chelsea made into the fifth round of the cup after seeing off Chesterfield 5-1 in the third round, before dispatching Plymouth Argyle 2-1 in the fourth round.
After that the Blues went ahead to win the FIFA Club World Cup title, before beating Crystal Palace 1-0 at away in the Premier League, and then followed that up with a comfortable 2-0 home win over Lille in the first leg of their last-16 tie in Champions League.
However, the capital club head into the match fresh off a brutal heartache in the EFL Cup final against Liverpool last Sunday. Thomas Tuchel’s decision to bring on sub keeper Kepa for the shoot-out backfired as the Basque failed to save 11 penalties then fired his own spot-kick over the bar to hand Liverpool the cup.
They will now be looking to respond with a positive result on Wednesday and they will fancy their chances to see of Luton as they have huge quality over the opponents and the last time they met the Blues cruised to a 3-1 victory.
