FC Porto play host to Club Brugge in Group B of the Champions League on Tuesday, with the hosts looking to bounce back from their dramatic defeat to Atletico Madrid last week.
Having won his third domestic title with Porto in five seasons, Sergio Conceicao will be hoping to retain the Primeira Liga for the first time, while beating his best achievement of the quarter-final stage in Champions League, which he reached with Porto in 2019 and 2021.
Conceicao’s side have already fallen three points behing Benfica in the league, while they lost their first Champions League game of the season after a dramatic finale against Atletico at the Metropolitano Stadium.
That said, Porto head into Tuesday’s encounter with Club Brugge under pressure to secure a victory, otherwise they could be facing a tough battle to progress from Group B.
Meanwhile, Club Brugge have become the dominant club in Belgium in recent years, winning the First Division in three consecutive seasons.
They are as well becoming regulars at the Champions League group stage, with this season’s appearance their sixth in seven years. However, since the tournament rebranded in 1992, they have never reached the knockout stages.
With Group B looking one of the weakest groups theoretically, new head coach Carl Hoefkens may feel he could be the man to make modern history in that regard at a club with great posterity in this competition in the past, having lost to Liverpool in the 1978 European Cup final.
Abakar Sylla’s 42nd-minute goal proved enough to defeat Leverkusen at Jan Breyden Stadium last week, giving Brugge an excellent platform to build from.
Hoefkens will hope to remain in Europe by finishing in the top three spots in the group, a fear they have managed in three of their last four appearances in the competition.
