Dinamo Batumi and Slovan Bratislava will be battling for a place in the second round of the Champions League qualifiers when they lock horns at the Batumi Arena in the second leg of their first-round tie on Wednesday night.
The two played out a goalless draw in the first leg at Tehelne Pole last week, with Dinamo Batumi managing the draw despite going down to 10 men before halftime. Captain Mamika Kobakhidze received his marching orders for two bookable offences.
Therefore it was a good result for Batumi to come away with the draw, which gives them a fighting chance of making it to the second round at home. The Georgian league is underway and Batumi have made great strides in their efforts to defend their 2021-22 top-flight title – the first in the club’s history – and currently sit nine points clear of closest challengers Dinamo Tbilisi at the summit.
They are unbeaten in their last 18 matches across all competitions, winning six and have a solid home form too as they have win nine of their last 11 home games in their domestic league campaign this season.
Meanwhile, the draw was a bit disappointing for Slovan Bratislava who had a home and a one-man advantage and the fans made their feelings known towards the team as reports emerged of fans booing players off the pitch and throwing beer cups onto the turf.
Bratislava had failed to win any of their final four friendly fixtures before welcoming Dinamo Batumi to their headquarters, and a lack of ideal preparation proved costly for a side who managed to make it to the Europa Conference League group stage last season.
They however have failed to get past this round in the Champions League qualifiers in last seven seasons and that is more likely to continue this season.
