Chelsea vs Real Madrid Match Analysis and Prediction

Real Madrid make a trip to the Stamford Bridge to face defending champions Chelsea on Wednesday in the first first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-finals tie.

Chelsea managed to qualify in their last Champions League tie, defeating Lille 4-1 on aggregate in the round of 16. After securing a 2-0 victory in the first leg at home, they picked up a 2-1 win in the return match, with Christian Pulisic and Azpilicueta scored in the second-leg win.

The Blues enter the contest off the back of a disappointing defeat in the domestic competition, which put a negative mark in their dream of a top-three finish, with Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal closing in, amid the troubles surrounding the club ownership.

In a game that seemed even in first half, going into the interval level, Antonio Ridiger scored the opener for the Blues in the 48th minute, before  Vitaly Janelt’s brace and efforts from Christian Eriksen and Yoane Wissa condemned Chelsea to a 4-1 defeat.

They now turn their focus to the European competition, where Timo Werner has caught the eye for Chelsea in the Champions League, with the attacker being the team’s top scorer with three goals.

When the two teams last met in action, Chelsea won 2-0 in a Champions League semi-final match at Stanford Bridge last season, with Timo Werner and Mason Mount getting on the scoresheet for the Blues.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid advanced to this stage by defeating Paris Saint-Germain 3-2 on aggregate in the round of 16, overcoming a one-goal first leg deficit with a 3-1 victory in the return match at home, with Karim Benzema scoring a hat-trick.

Real Madrid boast a fine away record in the competition this season with three wins and  one loss in away matches, currently on a three-match away winning streak in all competitions.

Chelsea news

Chelsea’s Ben Chillwell remains out for the long-term and Callum Hudson-Odoi is now dealing with a back problem as well as a sore Achilles.

Christian Pulisic is expected to come into contention here after a late return from international duty, while Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic will both hope to replace Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

Real Madrid news

Eden Hazard will be forced to miss out on a reunion with his former club after undergoing a fibular plate operation, while Luka Jovic is a fitness doubt due to an ankle problem.

Ancelotti is otherwise well-stocked for the first leg, although Eder Militao will not be available if he is cautioned.

Prediction and Odds

Chelsea have been finding it easy to keep clean sheets at home in the Champions League, but allowing four from Brentford could expose them here.

With veteran Benzema within the Real Madrid camp proves a goal threat against the Blues, but we expect them to settle for at least a draw.
