Liverpool make a trip to the Estadio da Luz for the first leg of their quarter-final with Benfica on Tuesday, having been handed what many would feel is the most favourable Champions League draw.
The Reds knocked eliminated Inter Milan out of the competition 2-1 on aggregate to make it to this stage, while Benfica secured a 3-2 victory over Ajax over two legs.
Benfica youngstar Darwin Nunez was the hero of the hour for his side against Ajax to propel them into the last eight of the Champions League in Amsterdam.
After the two sides played out a 2-2 draw in the first leg, Nunez scored the only goal of the second leg with 13 minutes remaining to upset the odds.
Nunez was on target once again against Sporting Braga in Friday’s Primeira Liga contest, but his penalty proved not enough as Benfica went down 3-2, with Vitinha scoring the important winner for the hosts.
Seeing a nine-game unbeaten streak across all competition come to an end is not the ideal preparation for a meeting with Liverpool, and Nelson Verissimo’s side have never made it past the quarter-finals of the Champions League in its current format, most recently losing to Bayern Munich at this stage in 2015-16.
Inter Milan was the team to break Liverpool’s impressive resilience on the Anfield turf, who did so in some style as Lautaro Martinez sent in a spectacular long-range effort to make things interesting in the second leg.
Defeat to Inter in the second leg is the only game that Liverpool have not won in their last 17 across all competitions, each of their last seven away matches have ended in victory, and the Reds went through all of their February and March without conceding a goal away from home, which is a positive in this fixture.
