Atletico Madrid vs Manchester United Match Analysis and Prediction

Manchester United will travel to Wanda Metropolitano on Wednesday looking to secure an advantage in the first leg of their last-16 Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid.

The hosts claimed second spot in Group B behind Liverpool to advance to this stage, while the Red Devils finished top of Group F to secure a spot in the knockout round of the competition.

Atletico enter the contest off the back of a 3-0 victory over Osasuna in La Liga, with Angel Correa, Luis Suarez and Joao Felix getting on the scoresheet.

The Red and Whites are currently 5th in the table, 15 points behind leaders Real Madrid, leaving the Champions League as their only realistic chance of silverware this season.

Diego Simeone’s side were less convincing in the group stage of the 2021-22 Champions League, winning just two of their six matches, but a 3-1 victory over Porto on the final matchday moved them to seven points to finish second.

Atletico lost to Chelsea in last season’s round of 16, but have reached the quarter-finals or better in five of their last eight Champions League campaigns under Simeone.

Manchester United enter the contest off the back of a 4-2 victory over Leeds United on Sunday, with Fred and Anthony Elanga coming off the bench to secure a vital victory for the Red Devils.

They now put their focus in the Champions League and will be aware of the importance of securing a positive first-leg result ahead of the return match at Old Trafford next month.

The Red Devils have won seven of their previous 11 round-of-16 ties, while they are in the knockout round for the 19th time, but they have not managed to make the final of the competition since 2011, and it will be intresting to see what Rangnick can deliver this season.

Atletico Madrid news

Atletico will be without both Felipe and Yannick Carrasco through suspension on Wednesday, while Daniel Wass and Matheus Cunha are both out through knee injuries.

Simeone could start Sime Vrsaljko at right back with Marcos Llorente ahead of him, while Cunha’s absence could see Joao Felix start alongside Luis Suarez.

Manchester United news

Mason Greenwood is out due to a club suspension, while Edinson Cavani remains a doubt due to a groin problem, but Eric Bailly could recover in time for the game.

Fred is also in contention, but Paul Pogba has impressed since his return from injury and could feature alongside Scott McTominay in midfield.

Prediction and Odds

Both teams enter the contest with the interest of securing a first leg advantage, and the host know that if they lose at home, securing a victory at Old Trafford could be a tough task.

With Manchester United’s scoring capability we could back them to win, but a draw is also possible.
