Southampton Football Club is an English club which plays in the Premier League based in Southampton, Hampshire. They have been in the top flight for the longest period since their promotion in 1966. However, the 2005-012 season was probably their worst time because they played in the second division. “The Saints” is the club’s nickname since its formation as a church football club. They have been considered a middle table team because they consistently finish at mid-position, either 9,8,10,11, or 12. However, they never go down without a fight making it tough for the big team.
Ownership
Southampton Football Club was a church-owned club when it was founded in 1885. Much has changed since then. The football world has shifted to a commercialized aspect. Now, the club is under Serbian tycoon Dragan Solakwho purchased it in the whopping amount of 100 million pounds. The club is under his holding company taking up an 80% stake. The previous owner Katharina Liebherr has the remaining percentage of the stake.
Stadium
Southampton FC stadium is called St. Mary’s. The stadium was opened in 2001 to replace ‘The Dell’, where they hosted matches since its formation. It is the biggest stadium in the south of England with a capacity of 32 589. The stadium looks well and has a simple but attractive structure. It has two big screens at each end. Also, below its roof, you can notice a transparent perspex strip. This feature allows more light into the stadium and enables sustainable pitch growth.
Colors, badge, and kit sponsorship
The Southampton FC primary or home colours kit is red, black, and yellow. Away kits' colours have been changing in different seasons. In the 2021-22 season, the kit had a combination of a yellow base with blue sleeves, blue shorts and yellow socks mixed with blue colours.
Southampton Football Club has had only two badge styles so far. The first one had a coat of arms representing their hometown. They later introduced the emblem, which represented the team philosophy or identity. Overall, the existing badge has a crest and is more modernized.
The current kit sponsor for Southampton FC is Sporstbet.io, a Coingaiming Group. It is one of the biggest sponsorship the Club has ever had. The Club will get bonuses from the deal after the end of each season.
Fans and rivalries
The Southampton FC fans are called the “scammers” or “scum”. The reason for these nicknames is yet to be known, maybe for political reasons, but it may be linked to their long rivalry with Portsmouth. Both are located in the same geography. Their matches are called the South Coast derby. Nonetheless, Portsmouth no longer plays in the first division, and probably the young generation has not seen the rivalry on their screens.
Club honors
Southampton FC has the FA Cup as their only major trophy in the cabinet. They won it in 1976 after a shock defeat against the mighty Manchester United at the time. Interestingly, Southampton was a second-division side.
