Leicester City will look to book a place in the quarter-finals of the Europa Conference League when they travel to Stade de la Route de Lorient to take on Rennes in the second leg of their last-16 tie on Thursday night, with kickoff at 20:45.
Leicester City put one leg in the quarter-finals of the competition when they edged their French rivals 2-0 in the first leg at King Power last week, with Marc Albrighton and Kelechi Ihenacho making the difference in the tie.
Rennes responded to the King Power defeat with an emphatic 4-2 victory over Lyon at away last Sunday in Ligue 1. Have now lost one of their last five games across all competitions, while have lost one in their last six Ligue 1 fixtures. They have claimed five victories in the run, which has seen them rise into the fourth place in the standings with just one point behind both third-placed Nice and second-placed Marseille.
Bruno Genesio’s side will be focused to qualify for the Champions League next season through Ligue 1 at the moment, but they will recognize that this is an opportunity to win a continental silverware, and thus will throw everything at trying to progress to the last eight. They are on a good home run having won all their last five matches at home and will want to extend the run.
Meanwhile Leicester City failed to extend their winning streak last time out as they fell to a 2-0 defeat to a determined Arsenal at the Emirates last Sunday. The defeat ended the Foxes’ four-match winning streak in EPL and the Conference League.
It also extended Leicester’s inconsistency this season and are still struggling to get themselves into the top-half of the Premier League table. They currently sit 12th on 33 points from 26 matches, two points behind the 10th-placed Southampton and 13 points outside the European places.
Therefore, Brendan Rodgers will recognize that to get into the European football next season Leicester might need to win the Conference League. Therefore, they will look to quickly get over the Emirates defeat as they aim to book a place in the last eight.
