Wellington Phoenix vs Newcastle Jets Match Analysis & Prediction

04/03/2023 5:00 am

Wellington Phoenix play host to Newcastle Jets at the Sky Stadium on Saturday in a meeting between two clubs vying for qualification to the Finals series.
While the hosts are fifth with just eight matches of the regular season left, the visitors are one point behind but narrowly outside of the six playoff spots.
The Phoenix snatches a point against Central Coast Mariners last weekend in the fourth minute of stoppage time through Oskar Zawada.
Ufuk Talay’s side have endured a tough sequence of four away matches in February, picking up four points from the final two matches of this stretch before jetting back to New Zealand to prepare for Newcastle’s visit.
Wellington Phoenix have not kept a clean sheet at home all season, shipping the second-most goals in front of their own fans, although they oddly boast a league-high three shutouts on the road.
Newcastle saw their six-game unbeaten run ended by reigning A-League champions Western United last weekend, losing 3-1 at home after failing to recover from Noah Botic’s first-half brace.
Arthur Papas’ side have not lost a league game on their travels since losing 2-0 to Macarthur on the second weekend of January, but they are the division’s joint-lowest scorers away from home, scoring just seven league goals on their travels this season.
Regardless of the venue, the Jets have attempted the fewest shots in the A-League this season and are heavily reliant on the Georgian forward Beka Mikeltadze to take and score these sporadic efforts.

In the 47 previous meetings between these two teams, Wellington Phoenix have claimed 23 victories while Newcastle Jets have won 18, and they have drawn in six. The Jets have scored 68 goals and conceded 83 in the process.

Newcastle Jets Team News
Reno Piscopo has not turned out for Newcastle Jets since equaising against Perth Glory at the start of February, missing the last three matches with an adductor problem he picked up during the warm-up for the home game against Melbourne Victory.
Both Beka Mikeltadze and Brandon O’Neill ate one booking away from suspension, but the pair have been on the brink of a ban for months, carefully avoiding another booking during this time.
