Valencia vs Celta Vigo Match Analysis & Prediction
17/01/2024 10:00 pm
Both unbeaten so far in 2024, Valencia and Celta Vigo meet at Estadio de Mestalla on Wednesday night, with a spot in the Copa del Rey quarter-finals at stake.
Rafa Benitez returns to the scene of several former glories, but his Celta Vigo side trail their hosts by 12 points in La Liga and have a far inferior cup record.
As eight-time Copa del Rey winners, Valencia certainly have the pedigree to dream of another success in the competition, while recent results suggest they can triumph in this week’s last-16 tie.
Either side of an extra-time victory over Cartagena in the cup, Valencia have beaten Villarreal and then Cadiz in their first two league matches of the new year, securing four straight wins across all competitions.
The latter came at Nuevo Mirandilla on Monday, when Hugo Duro opened the scoring and Los Che scored twice during second-half stoppage time to seal a 4-1 victory.
Just before their upturn began, Ruben Baraja’s side played out a goalless draw with Celta Vigo in late November, and they now meet with the same opponents for a cup tie at Mestalla, where they have been beaten just twice this season.
While their hosts have put together four wins from four, Celta came up just short in their bid to make it three straight victories on Saturday, when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Mallorca.
After kicking off 2024 by beating Real Betis, Celta claimed a 4-2 victory over Amorebieta in the Copa del Rey, although it took a second-half fightback to eliminated Segunda Division opposition.
Celta Vigo have never taken the final step and lifted the Copa del Rey, finishing runners-up on three occasions, but given the cup record Benitez boasts, they may have hope of upsetting Spain’s big guns and going all the way this year.

In the 51 previous meetings between these two teams, Valencia have claimed 24 victories while Celta Vigo have won 11, and they have drawn in 16. Celta Vigo have scored 49 goals and conceded 73 in the process.

Valencia will be without Selim Amallah and Mouctar Diakhaby, who are representing Morocco and Guinea respectively at the AFCON.
