Tajikistan vs Qatar Match Analysis & Prediction
17/01/2024 5:30 pm
A place in the knockout stage of the Asian Cup is within reach for Qatar as the hosts take on Tajikistan on Wednesday at Al Bayt Stadium.
In the opening match of this tournament, the Maroon claimed a 3-0 victory over Lebanon, while the Crowns settled for a goalless draw with China.
While the goalless draw with China extended Tajikistan’s unbeaten run to six matches across all competitions, Petar Segrt will see it as a missed opportunity as his young team were the aggressors for long stratches.
That result was the first time this team had failed to score since March 2023 (goalless draw against the UAE), with the Crowns scoring 13 time in their five previous matches.
Tajikistan have not lost to a side from Asia since June 2023 (5-1 defeat to Uzbekistan) and have not been held off the scoresheet in successive matches since playing to two goalless draws in November 2022 (against Russia) and March 2023 (against the UAE).
While it took nearly the entire opening 45 minutes for them to take the lead on Friday, their patience ultimately paid off, with Qatar scoring three or more goals in a game for the fourth time in their last five matches.
A victory on matchday two, combined with a win or draw for China against Lebanon, would see the Maroon progress into the last 16 on successive occasions for the first time.
Tintin Marquez’s side have not lost a group-stage match at this tournament since 2015 (2-1 defeat to Bahrain), winning their last four Asian Cup group games by a combined score of 13-0.
