19th-placed Salernitana have recently build some momentum behind their quest for Serie A survival, and they now play host to Fiorentina at Stadio Arechi on Sunday.
After managing to defeat Udinese 1-0 in midweek, the hosts have recorded back-to-back victories to move to within six points of safety, while Fiorentina suffered semi-final defeat in the Coppa Italia last time out.
Apparently preparing for a return to Serie B as recently as last week, Salernitana have stirred into life over the past few days, and picking up six points has renewed hopes of making a great escape.
Still with a game in hand on most of their relegation rivals, Davide Nicola’s side must now focus on improving a dire home record, as they have not tasted victory at the Arechi since early October.
Meanwhile, despite firing in 39 shots across two legs of their Coppa Italia semi-final tie against Juventus, Fiorentina were awaiting elimination at the final whistle on Wednesday.
I Viola were unable to breach their old rivals’ defence throughout the two legs, and to rub salt into the wound, Juventus’ goals in a 2-0 victory on the night were scored by former Fiorentina players Federico Bernardeschi and Juan Cuadrado.
Having moved ahead of regular qualifiers Atalanta and Lazio in the standings, Vincenzo Italiano’s side are therefore in contention for a return to European competition next season, where they could make a big impression on the continental scene.
However, they must quickly recover from their disappointing cup exit first, as they seek to post a fourth successive league victory for the first time in four years.
Fiorentina are yet to keep consecutive clean sheets this season, and could now do so after the 1-0 win at home to Venezia. However, they have conceded in each of their last 12 Serie A away matches.

Davide Nicola will be boosted by having both Pasquale Mazzocchi and captain Milan Djuric back from suspension, with Djiric being the club’s top scorer on home soil this term.
Lys Mousset, Mamadou Coulibaly and Matteo Ruggeri could be joined on the sidelines by Joel Obi, with Djuric joining Federico Bonazzoli up front.
