Still in the hunt for two trophies this season, Atalanta BC will be looking to keep the pressure on Serie A’s top five when they travel to Stadio Arechi to face relegated Salernitana on Monday.
Atalanta are within touching distance of the Europa League final and will take part in this season’s Coppa Italia decider, but they also seek a return to the Champions League.
Although Gianluca Scamacca shocked Stade Velodrome with an 11th-minute opener, Atalanta eventually had to settle for a 1-1 draw in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final against Marseille on Thursday night.
With the tie delicately poised, the prize of playing either Roma or Bayer Leverkusen in the final remains up for grabs, and Gian Piero Gasperini’s side are well-positioned to secure some major silverware for the first time since 1963.
Atalanta will soon attempt to repeat that fabled Coppa Italia success, as they meet Juventus in Roma later this month, but first their attention must shift back to Serie A, where they are in a three-horse race for Italy’s fifth and final Champions League spot.
Sixth in the table with five games left to play, Atalanta beat Empoli 2-0 last weekend through goals from Mario Pasalic and in-form forward Ademola Lookman, and they sit between the two Rome clubs – both of whom have played one game more.
Although they beat Monza in their most recent Serie A away game, Atalanta are yet to win successive league matches on their travels this season, with a trip down to Salerno presenting a perfect chance to put that right.
While Salernitana have lost just three of their seven top-flight encounters with Atalanta to date, Monday’s visitors did deal out the Granata’s joint-biggest Serie A defeat – a 8-2 beating in January of last year.
Given both sides’ current form fans of Salernitana may be fearing a similar result this time aound, as their team are yet to win a single match in 2024. Furthermore, they have scored just 11 goals and conceded 37.
Officially relegated after a 3-0 defeat to Frosinone last time out, Stefano Colantuono’s side are just the sixth club in Serie A history to have recorded 15 points or fewer after 34 matches of a season, so pride is all they have left to play for over the closing weeks of a dismal campaign.
