Topping the Championship standings at the end of this weekend’s fixtures will be a huge statement for either Burnley or Blackburn’s prospects as they aim to return to the Premier League next season. A win for either side would see them take a two-point lead over Sheffield United, who occupy third place currently.
While Burnley put together a 16-match unbeaten streak in the Championship, there were numerous occasions when they were lucky to preserve that record.
However, after near misses against Reading and Rotherham United, it became apparent that their luck was running out against Sheffield United. Vincent Kompany had few complaints as his team capitulated under pressure from their hosts, and it represented a wake-up call for anyone who assumed that Burnley would surge clear at the top.
