Blackburn Rovers vs Wigan Athletic Match Analysis & Prediction

06/02/2023 11:00 pm

Blackburn Rovers play host to Wigan Athletic at Ewood Park on Monday looking for the win that will move the club back into the Championship playoff spots.
Meanwhile, the visitors, under new manager Shaun Maloney, are looking to end a prolonged winless run to get off the bottom of the standings.
Thirteen defeats in 28 Championship matches meant that Blackburn were achieving something which was unprecedented, yet the inevitable happened on Friday as West Bromwich Albion beat Coventry City to edge Rovers out of the playoff places for the time being.
However, on a positive note, Jon Dahl Tomasson’s side have lost just once in six matches across all competitions, three of those matches being in the FA Cup.
After playing out a 2-2 draw with Birmingham City at Ewood Park on January 28, Blackburn came through the replay to set up a trip to Leicester City.
Tomasson will be far more focused on a crucial period of the season, with away matches at Watford and West Brom to follow their North-West contest with Wigan.
Wigan bowed out of the FA Cup at the third round stage after a narrow replay defeat to Luton Town, but new manager Maloney will be pleased to focus on matters in the Championship.
The club’s hierarchy made the bold decision to part ways with Kolo Toure after just nine matches, a call that they feel was justified with none of those matches ending with a victory.
Four points adrift of safety with a game in hand on 21st-placed Cardiff, the scenario in front of Maloney is not as bad as it may initially seem, although he is faced with the task of ending a winless run which has lasted since November 12.
Blackburn Rovers vs. Wigan Athletic Head to head
In the 29 previous meetings between these two teams across all competitions, Blackburn have claimed 12 victories while Wigan have won 10, and they have drawn in seven. Wigan have scored 43 goals and conceded 49 in the process.

Tomasson is hopeful that defender Daniel Ayala will recover from a knock to his ankle in time to take his spot in the Blackburn starting lineup.
Sorba Thomas will be considered for a debut after his switch from Huddersfield Town, but Ryan Hedges is more likely to start having remained as an unused substitute in the replay against Birmingham.

Wigan Athletic Team News
Maloney’s first selection is somewaht of an unknown, particularly formation-wise with Wigan having recently been lining up with a three-man backline.
Danel Sinani and Martin Kelly may be handed immediate debuts after their loan moves from Norwich City and West Brom respectively, while Omar Rekik should also be in contention after his temporary transfer from Arsenal.
