Both Poland and England will be looking to continue in their winning ways when they face off at Warsaw on Wednesday in an exciting Group I 2022 World Cup qualifier with kickoff at 21:45.
After Euro 2020 campaign didn’t go to plan for both sides, they found ways to bounce back with back-to-back wins in the current international break with Poland beating Albania 4-1 in last week’s midweek fixtures before thrashing San Marino 7-1 with Nicola Nanni scoring the rarest San Marino goals while Robert Lewandowski scored a brace for Poland before Karol Linetty and Karol Swiderski made it four for Paulo Sousa’s side in the first half. Then, Adam Buska came off the bench to score a second half hat trick to end the match 7-1.
Meanwhile England destroyed Hungary 4-0 in an impressive display from Gareth Southgate’s side whose black players met racial abuse from the Hungarian supporters in the last week’s midweek fixtures. Then the Three Lions followed that up with another 4-0 win against Andorra at Wembley with the birthday boy Bukayo Saka stealing the show with an assist and agoal.
Following the back-to-back wins both sides now occupy the two top spots in Group I with Poland sitting in the second position with 10 points from five matches with only one point above a surprise package Albania who are ready to pounce on any dropped points. Therefore, Poland will head into the match with three points in mind as any less favorable result could leave them out the top two spots since Albania will taking on the whipping boys San Marino.
England on the other hand occupy the top spot with 15 points in five matches meaning that they are yet to drop any points in the qualifiers so far. Gareth Southgate’s side have been in a good form in these qualifiers keeping an 100% with 17 goals and only conceded one and a win in Warsaw will mean that England would have cruised through to Qatar 2022 with three matches left to go.
These two already met in this world Cup qualifiers where England emerged triumphant with a 2-1 win in Wembley. It will be fascinating to see if they can maintain their superiority over Poland or is it time for Poland to say enough is enough.
