Espanyol vs Sevilla Match Analysis and Prediction

Sevilla will be looking for their first victory of the 2022-23 campaign on Saturday when they make a trip to RCDE Stadium to take on Espanyol.

While the hosts are 15th, having picked up four points from their first four matches this season, their visitors occupy 17th place in the table, boasting just one point from as many games.

Espanyol finished 14th in La Liga last season on their return to the top flight, and they will be determined not to become involved in a battle at the bottom of the table this term.

Diego Martinez’s side only picked up one point from their opening three matches of the season, drawing at Celta Vigo on the opening weekend before losing successive games to Rayo Vallecano and Real Madrid.

However, Espanyol will enter this contest off the back of a morale-boosting result, having defeated Athletic Bilbao 1-0 last time out through a late goal from Martin Braithwaite.

Meanwhile, Sevilla are unbeaten against Espanyol in La Liga since the start of 2017, but there is no getting away from the fact that it has been a hugely tricky start to the season for the club.

The club’s board are believed to have met on Wednesday to discuss the future of head coach Julen Lopetegui, and there have been reports that he could be dismissed off his duty should Sevilla lose this weekend.

Lopetegui’s side finished fourth in La Liga last season, just three points behind second-place Barcelona, but they are currently down in 17th place, losing 2-1 to Osasuna and Almeria, and 3-0 to Barcelona in three of their four league matches this season.

Sevilla only point came at home to Real Valladolid on August 19, while they will enter this game having lost 4-0 at home to Manchester City in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Espanyol news

Pol Lozano, Adria Pedrosa, Keidi Bare and Fernando Calero will be missing out for Espanyol through injury, so the hosts will not be at full strength for this contest.

Omar El Hilali could replace Calero in the middle of the defence, Braithwaite, Javi Puado and Joselu should continue as the front three.

Sevilla news

Jesus Manuel Corona remains out for Sevilla with a knee injury, while Marcao remains on the sidelines due to a hamstring problem.

Lopetegui is expected to make changes from the side that started against Manchester City, with Fernando, Karim Rekik, Suso, Rafa Mir and Joan Jordan among those likely to feature in the XI.

Prediction and Odds

Espanyol will be feeling confident about themselves following their victory over Athletic Bilbao last time out, and will fancy their chances of collecting maximum points here.

However, Sevilla have been unbeaten against their hosts since 2017, and we believe they have enough to force a share of the spoils from this contest.
