Both England and Germany will only play for pride when they face off at Wembley in their UEFA Nations League final tie this year on Monday.
England have already been relegated to League B following a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Italy last time out, while Germany’s hope of challenging for a first place in the Group A3 were crashed last time out following a disappointing 1-0 home defeat to group leaders Hungary.
The Friday defeat to Italy means that the Three Lions have now failed to win their last matches in the group, while have now gone 456 minutes without scoring a goal in the open play. They have only scored once from a penalty spot in the five matches.
To say that morale will be at a low point going into the World Cup would be a significant understatement, and the Three Lions boss did not do himself any favours with the #SouthgateOut brigade by claiming that Friday’s performance was a “step in the right direction”.
They still have a chance to at least get some pressure off with a win on Monday. The Three Lions have gone unbeaten in their last 15 matches at Wembley, winning 13 of them and they will hope to draw some confidence from that.
Meanwhile, despite stunning Italy 5-2 on Matchday Four, Germany have also been alarmingly underwhelming in the Nations League, failing to win any of their other four games in the group or keep a clean sheet, and Die Mannschaft are yet to make the final four of the competition.
The Hungary defeat however, marked Germany’s first defeat in any competition since Euro 2020. Therefore they have a bit of form than their hosts and will want to use that to end their campaign in style.
But, Die Mannschaft have only picked up one win from their seven Nations League away games since the competition’s inception, conceding at least one goal each time and they will need to play at the top of the game here.
