Benfica vs Paris Saint-Germain Match Analysis and Prediction

Benfica and Paris Saint-Germain will both be looking to continue their perfect starts to the 2022-23 Champions League when they meet in Wednesday’s Group H game at the Estadio da Luz.

Both sides have picked up six points from their opening two matches, but something has to give in this week’s top-of-the-table contest in Lisbon.

Benfica saw their impressive winning streak come to an end in a goalless draw with their Primeira Liga opponents on Saturday.

Prior to that, Roger Schmidt’s side had kicked off the 2022-23 campaign with 13 victories from 13 games across all competitions during an impressive start to their new era under Schmidt, who has quickly steered them to first place in the league table, three points clear of Porto and Braga.

After opening their European campaign with a 2-0 victory over Maccabi Haifa, As Aguias made further waves in Europe with a 2-1 win at Juventus, as Joao Mario and David Neres cancelled out an Arkadiusz Milik fourth-minute opener.

Benfica are only in second place having scored a goal fewer than PSG, and despite having to battle past Midtjylland and Dynamo Kyiv in Champions League qualifying, they have taken to the group stage like a duck takes to water.

Still holding off closest challengers Marseille in the Ligue 1 title fight, PSG were handed a scare against Maccabi Haifa in last Champions League match but eventually succeeded 3-1, and they continue to sit at the top of the Group H standings.

PSG have also gone through the 2022-23 campaign unbeaten so far, winning each of their last seven matches across all competitions, but they have not kept a clean sheet away from home in the Champions League since October 2020.

Benfica news

Benfica will be without defenders Lucas Verissimo, Joao Victor and Morato and while Victor is close to recovering from a serious knee injury, he will not be ready for midweek.

Antonio Silva should continue to man the backline with Nicolas Otamendi for the time being, while Julian Draxler could earn some minutes here.

Paris Saint-Germain news

Renato Sanches cannot catch a break on the fitness front, as he was only on the pitch for 16 minutes against Nice as a substitute before being forced off with a groin injury.

He joins Marco Verratti and Presnel Kimpembe on the sidelines, while Galtier may consider swapping Fabian Ruiz out for Danilo Pereira.

Prediction and Odds

It may be difficult to decide this contest between two unbeaten heavyweights, both of whom underwhelmed at the weekend, and Benfica are not to be taken lightly on home turf.

PSG’s front three are capable of producing some game-defining moments and we expect them to edge the contest in Lisbon.
