Augsburg will be attempting to make it back-to-back victories in the Bundesliga for the first time this season when they welcome Mainz 05 to WWK Arena for their postponed Matchday 26 clash on Wednesday night with kickoff 19:30.
Augsburg gave their Bundesliga survival a boost last time out as they picked up crucial three points in the 3-0 win over Wolfsburg at home on Sunday. They have now won two of their last league matches a run that has tem sitting in 14th on 29 points from 28 matches, three points above both Arminia and Hertha who occupy the relegation-playoff spot and the last relegation spot respectively.
Markus Winzierl’s side now have a chance to extend that gap using their match in hand against Mainz that was rearranged to place on Wednesday. A win on Wednesday will be crucial for Augsburg, who would move level on points with the 13th-placed Wolfsburg, while they would be just eight points outside the top-half with still five matches to go.
Die Fuggerstadter will fancy their chances here as they have only lost once to Mainz in their last seven Bundesliga matches and are unbeaten in their last five home encounters with against the 05ers. However they will be aware of the threat that the 05ers pose as they claimed a 4-1 victory in the reverse fixture early this season.
Mainz are coming into the match in a good mood as they are unbeaten in their last two Bundesliga matches. They claimed a comfortable 4-0 win over Arminia Bielefeld before the international break and they followed that up with a 1-1 draw at Borussia Monchengladbach last Sunday.
However, there are in an inconsistent form having won two, drawn two and lost two of their last Bundesliga matches and they currently sit in the 10th spot on 38 points from 27 matches, nine points above their hosts and just a point outside the top-half.
They will now be looking to break into the top-half, while also getting closer to the European places with a positive result on Wednesday. They are currently six points behind the sixth-placed Hoffenheim but have a chance of reducing that gap with a win tin the in hand fixture.
However, they have been struggling on the road recently as they have now failed to win any of their last seven away matches in the Bundesliga, suffering five defeats in the run. This is something Augsburg will look to capitalize on.
