AEK Larnaca vs Rennes Match Analysis and Prediction

Ligue 1 outfit Rennes will make the long trip to Cyprus to kick off their Europa League campaign against AEK Larnaca in Group B on Thursday.

The home side head into the contest at the AEK Larnaca Arena – Georgois Karapatakis having suffered a 3-2 league defeat to Ominia at the weekend, while Rennes could only manage a 1-1 draw with Troyes.

A second-placed finish in the Championship round of the 2021-22 Cypriot First Division presented Larnaca with the opportunity to participate in the Champions League for the first time in their history, entering the top tier of European competition in the second qualifying round.

However, they were quickly eliminated by Midtjylland before dropping to Europa League qualifying, but neither FK Partizan nor Dnipro-1 were any match for the Cypriot side as they made the group stage for just the third time ever.

Jose Luis Oltra’s side had previously reached the Europa League proper in 2011-12 and 2018-19 but unsurprisingly failed to progress to the knockout stages.

Defensive moments were the theme for Rennes in the summer transfer window, but a rearguard shake-up has not had the disired effect for the French club, who could only salvage a point against Troyes at the weekend.

Rennes have recorded two wins, two draws and two defeats from their first six matches in the 2022-23 Ligue 1 campaign, and they are still in search of their first clean sheet of the season.

Their attacking capabilities have never been questioned, and the arrival of Amine Gouiri from Nice has only strengthened the visitors in that regard as they look to build on last season’s run to the Europa Conference League last-16, where Leicester City defeated them.

Rennes appear in the Europa Legue group stage for the fourth time this year, but have only reached the knockout stages once in 2018-19.
