Wolverhampton Wanderers will play host to Watford at the Molineux Stadium on Thursday as both teams will be looking to bounce back from their weekend defeats in the Premier League.
The hosts went down to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Crystal Palace, while Watford were defeated 3-2 by Arsenal last time out.
Any hopes for a top-four challenge appear to be slowly fading away for Wolves, who fell to their third Premier League defeat in a row in a dismal style at home to Crystal Palace on Saturday.
Jean-Philippe Mateta scored the opener in the 19th minute before Wilfred Zaha’s penalty confirmed the victory for the visitors, and Brunao Lage certainly made his frustration known following the full-time whistle.
Successive defeats against Arsenal, West Ham United and Crystal Palace have seen Wolves slip to eighth in the standings, so their European destiny is no longer in their own hands.
Meanwhile, Watford enter the contest winless in their last three matches in the league, drawing one and losing two, including Saturday’s 3-2 home defeat against Arsenal at Vicarage Road.
Martin Odegaard netted the opener in the 5th minute to put the Gunners ahead, before Juan Hernandez restored parity in the 11th minute. However, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli put in their efforts in either side of half time and despite Moussa Sissoko scored in the 87th minute, the game finished in favour of Arsenal.
Watford enter the midweek round of fixture still sturggling in 19th spot, three points adrift of the safety of 17th place, but a record of just one goal conceded from their last four league away games is a welcome statistic ahead of Thursday.
However, three of their last four encounters with Wolves in the Premier League have ended in defeat, including a 2-0 loss at Vicarage Road back in September.
