Wolfsburg will be looking to put an end to their winless run when they welcome Hertha Berlin in the Bundesliga at the Volkswagen Arena on Saturday.
The hosts are currently on an eight-game losing run in all competitions, while the visitors will be looking to bounce back from their defeat last weekend.
Wolfsburg’s recent results becomes more concerning as each week passes, with the 1-0 defeat at VFL Bochum on Sunday making their new year start as 2021 ended.
Since their four opening victories of the season, Wolfsburg have only won three times in the 20 matches that have followed in all competitions, all of which came successively in Kohfeldt’s first three games in charge, after he took over Mark van Bommel in October.
Three points on Saturday would be enough to lift Wolfsburg to 11th should they win the game, but even if other results go in their favour, they would still sit seven points off a Champions League place.
As for Hertha Berlin, they are just a point and one place above their hosts at the Volkswagen Arena, though their situation is not quite so concerning.
They still aim for a top-half finish, but Tayfun Korkut’s side will need to extend the current three-point gap between them and Augsburg in the relegation playoff spot.
After a beginning of two wins, one draw and one defeat in his opening four games since succeeding Pal Dardai, Korkut and his side returned from the winter break with a 3-1 defeat last weekend at home to FC Koln.
However, with their hosts in such poor form, Korkut will be confident that his side can kickstart their new year with a win on Saturday, and move away from danger in the process, while reversing their 2-1 defeat from their opponents on matchday two beck in August.
