VfB Lubeck will be looking to record a major upset when the play host to Mainz 05 in the DFB-Pokal on Tuesday evening.
On the other hand, the visitors are still aiming to reach the final of Germany’s domestic cup for the first time in their history.
Lubeck have actually gone as far as Mainz have in this competition, when they uneasily lost to eventual champions Werder Bremen after extra-time in the semi-finals of the 2003-04 campaign.
They shocked second tier outfit Hansa Rostock to set up a second round tie with Mains this season, with Stadoin an der Lohmuhle set to be at full capacity when the Bundesliga opponents arrive in town.
Lukas Pfeiffer’s side finished fifth in their fourth tier of German football last season, failing to gain an instant promotion back to 3. Liga following their relegation at the end of the 2020-23 campaign.
However, Lubeck have opened up a six-point lead at the top of the table this time around, having picked up 30 points from 12 matches, and they will fully believe that they can cause another cup upset this week.
Meanwhile, Mainz will head into the contest confident of themselves after putting an end to a winless run of four matches by defeating Werder Bremen 2-0 away from home on Saturday.
Only Bayern Munich had scored more goals than Bremen heading into the weekend, but Mainz became just the second team to shut them out this season in a textbook away performance.
Mainz defeated Erzgebirge Aue by a 3-0 scoreline in the first round of the DFB-Pokal at the end of July, and Bo Svensson will be hoping for a similarly professional performance against Lubeck – who are a tier lower than Erzgebirge – on Tusday as he looks to mastermind a serious cup run this season.
