Venezia and Atalanta will both look to put an end to their poor runs in Serie A when they lock horns at Stadio Pierluigi Penzo in their Matchday 34 tie on Saturday with kickoff at 16:00 EAT.
Venezia were left empty-handed again in Serie A when they fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat to Fiorentina last Saturday at away. They have now lost each of their last seven league matches and have only won one of their last 19 league matches, a run that has had them sit in the relegation zone for quite some time now. They sit 18th, level on 22 points with fellow relegation candidates Salernitana and Genoa, six points adrift of safety.
Despite having a game in hand on the 17th-placed Cagliari Paolo Zanetti’s side look set for an immediate return to Serie B, unless they turn around their fortunes in their six remaining fixtures. They have a poor home record having suffered 10 defeats in their 14 home matches so far this season, and have all their last three fixtures at Perluigi Penzo – something they will be desperate to end.
Meanwhile, Atalanta were also left empty-handed last time out as they suffered a 2-1 home defeat to Verona in Serie A. They have now suffered three defeats in a row across all competitions as well as in Serie A, and they have only won one of their last six league matches – a run that has seen them drop down into eighth in the standings.
Indeed, it has been a poor showing from Atalanta who had a brilliant start to the campaign spending some time in the top four. They are now 12 points adrift of the fourth-placed Juventus and five outside the European places, but still have a game in hand.
With just six matches to go Atalanta have very slim chances of clinching a fourth-place finish, but they certainly have time to fight for a European place and Gian Gasperini will go for. However, they need to bounce back to winning ways as soon as possible and this fixture against Venezia couldn’t have come at a better time.
