La Liga 2021-22 campaign kicks off this Friday night with Valencia welcoming Getafe for the season opener at Mestalla with kickoff at 22:00.
Both sides will be looking to improve in their campaigns this season after finishing in the bottom half last season. Valencia had a disappointing run last season finishing in the 13th position with 43 points, the lowest and worst position they have ever finished in since the 1987-88 season when they finished in the 14th position.
Jose Bordalas, who was appointed Valencia’s head coach back in May, will be tasked with restoring his side to top-four which will be his biggest challenge considering club’s financial problems which means that it has been a very quiet summer transfer window for Valencia which could equal another frustrating season.
Despite Valencia slumping towards the end of the pre-season, they had a good start and run in the preseason winning three opening matches in a row with three goals in each match. They won four matches generally of their seven preseason friendlies with two defeats and a draw.
However, as mentioned earlier The Bats slumped at the end of the preseason as they failed to score a goal in two of their final four preseason matches and could not score more than one goal in matches they hit the back of the net. Also, they finished winless in their last two, drawing 1-1 with AC Milan before loosing 2-1 to a newly promoted Premier League outfit Brentford.
Meanwhile Getafe also had a disappoint campaign last season finishing in 15th position with 38 points in 38 games and only four points outside the relegation zone. Getafe were promoted back to the Spanish top-tier in 2017 and finished eighth, fifth and eighth again in their first three seasons back before falling to 15th last season.
Getafe under the management of Michel will be looking to improve this season which is evident in their pre-season as they will kickoff their new campaign with an unbeaten run in the pre-season winning all of their six preparation friendlies. Also, Michel has been busy in the summer transfer window in terms of recruitment bringing in the likes of Carles Alena, Sandro Ramirez, Stefan Mitrovic, Dario Poveda, Diego Conde, Vitolo and Jose Macias all arriving either on permanent or loan deals. Getafe also has let go of some of their players including Francisco Portilo, Angel Rodriguez and Xabi Etxeita.
Getafe struggled with their away matches last season picking only 13 points at away but will head into the Friday’s opener in good confidence as they haven’t lost in their last seven matches across all competitions and also, they have lost none of their last four away matches.
