United Arab Emirates will be looking to keep their slim chances of an automatic qualification to the 2022 World Cup finals in Qatar alive when they host Syria Al Maktoum Stadium in Dubai for the seventh Group A fixture on Thursday evening with kickoff at 18:00.
UAE have made an inconsistent third round qualifying campaign with the side recording one win, three draws and two defeats in their six Group A matches to collect six points, which have left them sitting in the third place with eight points behind the second-paced South Korea and one point above the fourth-placed Lebanon.
They head into the match off the back of two consecutive defeats to Tunisia and Qatar in the Arab Cup last month. The defeats ended their three-match winning streak on the bounce across all competitions and they will be looking to bounce back in this match.
It’s a bit unrealistic for UAE to fight for the top-two Group A positions with eight points separating them and the second-placed South Kore and therefore they will be looking to keep their playoff spot and they will fancy their chances against their lowly visitors here.
Meanwhile Syria have made a poor third round qualifying campaign with the team failing to claiming a win in their six Group A matches so far, while picking two draws and four defeats in the run and they currently are stuck rock-bottom in the standings with two points on the board to their name.
They are four points behind their third-placed opponents and with four matches remaining Syria might still have chance of making it to Qatar in November through playoffs, but they will need to work on their form if they are to claim the qualification chances.
They head into the match in a poor form having only won one of their last 10 matches across all competitions and are coming off a 2-1 defeat to Mauritania in Group B of the Arab Cup and they will be looking to bounce back as they aim at claiming their first win in third round of the World Cup qualifiers.
