Ivan Toney – Brentford
Ivan Toney is the top striker in England to rival Harry Kane for World Cup 2022 in Qatar. Toney is 26 years old and has six goals in the Premier League at the time of writing. His call-up to England was the headline of the last international break. Unfortunately, he didn’t play against either Italy or Germany, meaning he will be uncapped if he goes to Qatar.
Speaking in his news conference after joining up earlier this month, Toney said he never doubted his inclusion. This came at the age of 26 and follows his departure from Newcastle and career rebuild at Peterborough in 2018 before his move to the Bees a year later.
Tammy Abraham – AS Roma
Tammy Abraham is a striker with a brilliant goalscoring record in the Italian league, and he’s proven himself at the highest level by scoring 17 Serie A goals last season. He has a shot accuracy of 57.89%, and he’s already scored 13 league goals this season.
He moved to Roma last summer to link up with Jose Mourinho, and his game has developed immensely since leaving Chelsea. His current England record is identical to that of Calvert-Lewin. However, he’s got more experience than both of them and is on track to be the best striker in England after Harry Kane leaves.
Callum Wilson – Newcastle
Callum Wilson has been one of the Premier League’s top strikers this season, despite missing five games with a hamstring injury.
He returned for Newcastle’s win against Fulham on Saturday and should have enough time to get up to speed to get on the plane.
Despite his lack of action throughout 2022, thanks to a calf injury that kept him out between December and April, his minutes-to-goal ratio of 103 ranks as the highest on this list, as does his shot conversion rate of 26.32 percent.
Wilson would provide something different to Kane’s preference for dropping deep too. Moreover, he is a viable option with an eye for goal.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin – Everton
Dominic Calvert-Lewin is the only one of the four strikers in this squad who has tasted senior international football, having played in England’s opening match at Euro 2020 against Iceland.
He also scored a crucial goal in that game, finishing with aplomb. But his injury problems have hampered his progress. He only made 17 Premier League appearances last season, scoring five goals, which many believe played a big part in Everton’s flirtation with relegation.
He is yet to feature in this campaign, and his lack of action has most likely disadvantaged him in making this squad. But, having made the squad for Euro 2020 last summer, the 25-year-old is still very much in contention for a place on England’s plane to Qatar.
