Top 10 Longest Winning Streaks in Football History

The sports world has seen many dynasties, teams, players, or even entire leagues. They come and go often, but there are also cases where some can last for years or decades. People will argue about the records, but we have proof that all of this is true. We’ve gathered a list of the longest winning streaks in football history to prove our point.

Bayern Munich – 23 wins (2019/2020)

Bayern Munich has won 23 consecutive matches in Bundesliga, the German top-tier football league. They achieved the record during the 2019/2020 season. The streak started on December 27th, 2019, with a 4-0 win over Hannover 96, and ended on March 31st, 2020, with a 3-1 loss against Werder Bremen.

During this run, Bayern lost only one match out of 24 played in Bundesliga. This is by far the longest winning streak in Bundesliga history, breaking records previously held by FC Schalke 04 and Borussia Dortmund with 18 consecutive wins each (2006/2007).

The German team was led by head coach Niko Kovac and captain Manuel Neuer during this period. The team only lost two games during the streak: once to Borussia Dortmund and once to Borussia Monchengladbach.

Real Madrid – 22 wins (2014/15)

Real Madrid’s win streak is the longest in football history, with a 22-game winning streak between 2014 and 2015. Los Blancos racked up 12 victories in La Liga, six in the Champions League, two in the Copa del Rey, and two in the Club World Cup. Their rivals Barcelona were their closest challengers, with a streak of 21 games during that same period.

In addition to their record-breaking run of 22 consecutive victories, Real Madrid also set records for points earned (93) and goals scored (118). This was a historic season for Real Madrid and one that will go down in history as one of their greatest achievements ever.

Manchester City – 21 wins (2020/2021)

Manchester City has the longest winning streak in football history, with a 21-game run from 2020/21.

In the English Premier League, one of the world’s most competitive leagues, Manchester City has been on a tear since its start in 2020. The club has maintained an incredible winning streak that no other team can match.

The team’s streak started in November of 2020 when it began its first season as a member of the Premier League. It continued through March 2021, when it finally lost its first match after 21 straight wins.

This is a record that no other team has been able to come close to breaking: The second longest run belongs to German club Borussia Dortmund (20 games), followed by Spanish club Real Madrid (18 games).

Barcelona – 18 wins (2005/06)

Barcelona, who have won the La Liga title eighteen times, set the record for the longest winning streak in football history, with 18 straight wins.

The Barcelona team took home the Spanish League trophy for the second time in 2005/06, after winning it once before in 1919/20. They went on to win their next fifteen games before falling to Real Madrid, 5-0.

This record is all the more impressive considering that Barcelona maintained their momentum throughout a full season of play—they did not have any losses or draws during this stretch of games.

They romped to 18 wins in a row during the 2005/06 season and did it while playing in three major competitions: La Liga, Champions League, and Copa del Rey. Their winning streak included 13 victories in La Liga, three in the Champions League, and two in the Copa del Rey before being beaten 4-2 by Real Zaragoza.

Bordeaux – 16 wins (2008/09 & 2009/10)

It’s no secret that Bordeaux was a powerhouse in French football during the 2008/09 and 2009/10 seasons. The only team that could compare to their success was their rival Olympique Lyonnais, who won nine consecutive titles from 2002 to 2010.

When it came to winning streaks, however, no one could top Bordeaux’s 16-match streak at the end of 2008/09 and the beginning of 2009/10. They started by winning three matches in a row, then added another 11 before finally losing. That gave them a total of 14 wins, and 2 draws out of 16 matches.

And while Lyon could match this feat with nine wins and one draw over 10 matches just a few years later, Bordeaux still holds the record for the longest winning streak by any team in French football history today.

Paris Saint Germaine – 16 wins (2015/16)

Paris Saint Germain’s 16-game winning streak in 2015/16 set them on their way to winning four trophies that season. It was a run that featured nine wins in Ligue 1, three in the Coupe de France, three in the Coupe de Ligue, and one in the Champions League.

PSG equaled Bordeaux’s 16 consecutive victories with a 2-1 victory over Lyon at Parc des Princes on January 21st, 2016. They went on to win the league by four points from Monaco and claimed their first ever domestic treble by beating Auxerre 2-1 in the final of both cup competitions that year.

The record ended when they lost 3-2 away at Montpellier on March 4th, 2016, as they finished second behind Marseille for the second time.

Real Madrid – 15 wins (2011/2012)

In the 2011/12 season, Real Madrid won 15 consecutive games in all competitions. The streak began on November 19, 2011, with a 4–2 win over Málaga at home. It ended on March 3, 2012, after Barcelona’s 2–1 loss. Madrid secured 15 consecutive wins in all competitions.

Madrid dominated La Liga with 20 wins out of 38 matches to finish with 95 points. They picked up 174 goals in all competitions during the season. In addition to winning the Copa del Rey and reaching the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League, Madrid also won the Copa de la Liga by beating Barcelona 1–0 at Camp Nou.

Lyon – 14 wins (2006)

In 2006, Lyon won their seventh straight title. To win a title in France, a team has to win at least three games in the competition’s group stage. Lyon managed to pick up 14 wins within those seven games, which is still considered one of the most impressive streaks in football history.

The team also won six consecutive French League Cups from 2002-2007 and five straight UEFA Champions League titles from 2002-2006.

Bayern Munich – 14 wins (2017/2018)

Bayern Munich’s 14-win streak started on March 2, 2018, and ended on April 29, 2018. They won their 14th game against Besiktas 5–0, putting them at 15 points ahead of the Bundesliga table.

The club has had a long history of success in football, but this was the first time they had had a winning streak this long. It also broke a record for the longest win streak by any club in Germany.

Liverpool – 18 wins (2019/20)

Liverpool has the longest winning streak in English football, having won 18 consecutive matches in the 2019/20 season. The streak started with a 4-1 win over Norwich on August 24th and ended on December 14th when they lost 1-0 to Tottenham Hotspur.

The Reds’ manager, Jurgen Klopp, is known for his love of using young players and was able to bring them together to form one of the strongest teams in the league.
