Switzerland U21 vs France U21 Match Analysis & Prediction
28/06/2023 9:45 pm
As the European U21 Championship’s group stages reaches its climax, Swtzerland U21 must at least avoid defeat against Group D’s top team France U21 if they are to progress on Wednesday.
After failing to complete a dramatic comeback against Italy at the weekend, Switzerland are level with the Azzurrini on three points, while France eliminated Norway to put one foot in the quarter-finals.
Since finishing runners-up in 2011, Switzerland have failed to even reach the European U21 finals on several occasions, and they were eliminated in the group stage two years ago.
On this occasion, they certainly are not lacking firepower as they have now scored in eight straight matches, while Basel striker Zeki Amdouni has also tallied five goals in as many senior international appearances this year – having scored three times during this month’s Euro 2024 qualifiers.
As coach Sylvain Ripoll could turn to three substitutes of proven quality against Norway – Elye Wahi scored 19 Ligue 1 goals for Montpellier this season, Amine Gouiri netted 15 for Rennes and Rayan Cherki has been a regular for Lyon – there is no doubting the depth of France talent pool this summer.
France may not have won the U21 Euros since 1988, but after coming through their qualifying campaign with eight wins and two draws – conceding just five tims, while scoring 31 goals themselves – the pre-tournament favourites are well placed to set that straight.
