Brentford Football Club (The Bees) is an English professional football club based in Brentford, west of London in England. The club was founded in 1889 and plays in the Premier League, the highest tie of English football, following their promotion through the playoffs at the end of the 2020-21 Championship campaign.
Ownership
Brentford is owned by Matthew Benham, who is well known in the football and analytics field. He took over the club's ownership in 2012 when Brentford struggled financially. He has since helped the club rise to the Premier League after a 74-year absence.
Stadium
In 1889 when the club was formed they played their home matches at Griffin Park. They, however, moved to their present home, the Brentford Community Stadium, in 2020.
Colors, badge, and kit sponsorship
Brentford's predominant home colors since the 1925-26 season are red and white striped shirt, black shorts and red or black socks. Away kits have varied over the years, with the current being yellow shirt, yellow shorts and yellow socks.
The Bees have had several badges on their shirts since the club was formed in 1889. The first one to appear on the kits was in 1893 and was a white shield, with 'BFC' in blue and a wavy line in blue, which is thought to represent the river and the rowing club that founded the football club. Since then, the badge has undergone many changes, with the final edit coming in 2017; the design of the badge now is a double circle with a bee in the center, the inner ring is white, and the outer one is red. It also has the club name and year founded written in white in the outer circle.
Fans and rivalries
Brentford has a large fanbase and support drawn from all-over west London, and most recently, when they made their way into the Premier League have attracted support from all over the world.
The club's main rivals are fellow West London-based teams, Fulham and Queens Park Rangers. The most prolonged rivalry standing is with Fulham; in the past, the fixture was marred with violence. Now the fixture sees passions run high amongst both sets of supporters with the local pride on the line.
The rivalry with QPR intensified in 1967 when Rangers failed in an attempt to take over Brentford. The move would have seen QPR move to Griffin Park and Brentford quit the Football League.
Club honors
Brentford has won several titles in the lower leagues in the EFL, including one Championship title in 1934-35, and are one-time Championship Play-off winners (2020-21). They have also at least won once in the Third Division and Fourth Division.
They have also won several awards in the Football League, including two Community Club of the year, one League Two Community Club of the year, one Best Club Sponsorship, and eight Family Excellence Awards.
