Both sides will be looking to claim their second Group A victories and on a row when they lock horns at the Rashid Stadium in the final World Cup qualifying fixture on Tuesday evening with kickoff at 16:45.
Syria have already failed to make it to the World Cup finals, with the side sitting the bottom of Group A on five points from their nine group matches, four points behind the third-placed UAE which means even a positive result on Tuesday will not be enough for the Syrians to claim the playoff spot.
However, Ghassan Maatouk’s side will want to go out strongly and add to their 3-0 triumph over Lebanon in their previous qualifying encounter. It was by no means a dominant showing from Syria, as they only had 36% of the possession but they were lethal in front of goal, scoring three of their four efforts on target and will be fascinating to see how they perform in this one.
Meanwhile still have hopes of making it to the World Cup finals in Qatar later this year through playoffs, however, they need nothing less than a win to do so as they sit fourth on eight points one point behind the third-paced UAE with a game to go.
This was made possible through their narrow and crucial 1-0 win against UAE in their previous qualifying tie on Thursday, with Hussein Ali 53rd goal sealing Iraq’s first third round victory while keeping their World Cup dream afloat.
They will therefore be more desperate for the three points on Tuesday and will go in all guns blazing, but we still expect a low scoring encounter in this clash.
