Sweden and Spain return to action on Thursday evening in the derby of the fourth round in the European World Cup Qualifications at the Friends Arena.
Sweden host Spain in a rematch of their Euro 2020 clash in Seville this summer, but this time with vital World Cup points up for grabs. The two teams have both had strong starts to qualification, while they also come into the upcoming round of fixtures on the back of relatively impressive showings at Euro 2020 in the summer.
Sweden had their start in the world cup qualifying in March with a victory against Georgia then Kosovo. With the perfect start to the group, they headed to the Euros with confidence and managed to hold the opponents, Spain, in a goalless draw.
Sweden fallout in the Euros came from the first knockout round against Ukraine with the match ending in a 2-1 defeat. Sweden return to action with the hopes to continue their strong campaign in the world cup qualifiers as they meet Spain who will be looking to be on top of the qualifying group
Spain had their first match in the world cup qualifiers held to a draw against Greece before bouncing back to a victory against Georgia. They currently sit at the top of the group after picking up seven points from the nine available.
However, it is should be noted that Luis Enrique’s troops are yet to keep a clean sheet in this qualifying campaign. It is a poor stat if we know they’ve played the likes of Greece, Georgia, and Kosovo by far.
Spain come into this match from a wonderful performance in the Euros and were eventually stopped by latter champions, Italy, in the semifinal.
