Sunderland will host Lincoln City at the Stadium of Light on Tuesday with the opportunity to move to the top of the League One standings.
As for Lincoln, they moved outside of the relagation zone at the weekend, as they managed to defeat promotion contenders Oxford United.
Sunderland held a lead in added-on time against Wycombe Wanderers at the weekend, and Sunderland head coach Lee Johnson cannot be satisfied with the eventual 3-3 draw.
However, avoiding a loss away on the turf of their promotion rivals should not necessarily be regarded as a disappointing result, as they are now unbeaten in 10 league matches.
The Black Cats have played more matches than many of the teams competitng for a return to the second tier, but they at least have an opportunity to record a good result on Tuesday.
Sunderland have spent much of the season playing catch-up, and a victory at the Stadium of Light would alleviate some of the pressure which has consistently been on their shoulders.
Ross Stewart managed to score another two goals at Adams Park, the Sottish frontman having now scored 17 goals from 25 league appearances this season.
Meanwhile, Lincoln City would have expected to be rivalling Sunderland for promotion again after distressingly missing out in the League One playoff final in May.
Nevertheless, it took an unexpected victory over Oxford to move Michael Appleton’s side outside of the bottom four, ending a seven-game winless run in the process.
With the kind of players he has at his disposal, Appleton will be confident that Lincoln will eventually move clear of any danger, but they need more performances like the one at Sincil Bank at the weekend.
Swansea City loanee Morgan Whittaker could prove to be an inspired signing at this level, as he got off the mark on his debut.
